Welcome to Discover Guitar

The purpose of this course is to provide beginner guitar players with a foundation for learning their instrument. Through the use of our online learning platform, the learner will work with their tutor in developing an effective framework for their ongoing development as an instrumentalist, based around their own goals and objectives. This will in turn facilitate the capacity to use their instrument as their primary tool for creating and/or performing music.

Core areas of study in this course will include;

  • A quick guide to the guitar and amplifier
  • How to tune your guitar
  • An introduction to how to play the guitar
  • The basics of music notation
  • A series of lessons introducing new musical concepts and techniques
  • Songs for you to learn and play along with backing tracks
  • Opportunities to rehearse and perform these songs with other likeminded individuals
  • Encouragement to explore and find inspiration from other musicians and styles
  • The ability to share your work with others.

Through completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of basic care of the instrument and the instrumentalist
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan the development of instrument-specific techniques, appropriate to making and/or performing music at this level
  • Know how to review progress in instrumental techniques, identifying strengths and areas for development

Discover Guitar works best when Bloom’s taxonomy is implemented.

  1. Remember – recollection of facts and concepts. This requires practice.
  2. Understand – discuss your findings in an open forum with your teacher. Identify fundamental concepts within pieces of music that you are studying, recognise patterns within music theory, translate and transpose those fundamentals to key elements of your studies
  3. Apply – use this information in new pieces. Can it expedite the learning process?
  4. Analyse – relate your findings to an abundance of artists and pieces; identify differences; distinguish key factors
  5. Evaluate – justify your choices. Evaluate your progression with your teacher constantly referring to the published descriptors
  6. Create – produce your own original work – compositions, development and improvisation

There are no entry requirements for this course but it is taught in English.
